Explicit teaching of literacy must not be buried in CPM

The Ministry of Education NZ has now released the first stage of the Common Practice Model for the new Literacy, Communications and Maths Strategy.

🤔 While we are pleased to see it reference Structured Literacy and the need to strengthen explicit teaching in literacy, we share the concerns of James Chapman, Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology at Massey University, that “the section on explicit teaching had been “condensed” and lacked detail”.

We’re looking forward to seeing far more detail when phase two is released in September and look forward to the opportunity to provide feedback.

💭 We’d love to know your thoughts on phase 1 of the CPM. Let us know in the comments below 👇

You can access the Common Practice Model here.
