The refreshed New Zealand Curriculum is informed by the Science of Learning. But what does this actually look like and sound like in my school?

In this interactive and practical workshop participants will:

  • Be introduced to the key principles of the Science of Learning research including Cognitive Load Theory and different models of Explicit Instruction.

  • Explore the place of the Science of Learning research and approaches, and Explicit Teaching, in the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, Structured Literacy and Structured Maths.

  • Unpack the links, and potential challenges, to the existing practices in your school including Assessment for Learning and Student Inquiry.

  • Dive deep into a range of Science of Learning successful strategies including...

    • Activating Prior Knowledge

    • Engagement Norms

    • Whole Class Teaching

    • Gradual Release of Responsibility (“I do, We do, You do”)

    • Retrieval Practice (including Spaced practice and Interleaving

    • Teacher Clarity (including learning intentions, success criteria, exemplars and worked examples

    • Checking for Understanding.

  • Decide your school’s Science of Learning next steps and plan for your school’s longer-term Science of Learning journey.
