Call to Action, July 2021
An update to our original Manifesto from 2020: a 4 page Call to Action to Lift Literacy in NZ (July 2021). This sets out:
Why Literacy Matters: the relationship between literacy and other aspects of a person’s wellbeing, behaviour and learning, and some statistics on our literacy achievement in NZ.
The Literacy Pathway: the factors that underpin literacy development from birth to adulthood and what aspects of literacy instruction should be the focus at different stages.
Our broad recommendations for a Literacy Strategy: including an assessment of where we are currently at and where current policy responses will get us, and then what further actions (the gap) are needed to permanently and efficiently ‘shift the dial’ on literacy.
A map of the Education sector: setting out the numbers of students, teachers and adult learners, and various stakeholders that the Strategy needs to work for and include.
Lifting Literacy Aotearoa Manifesto, July 2020
