Decodable books

Decodable books are a key resource in the early stages (1 to 2 years) of literacy instruction.

This guide developed by Paula Short of the Dyslexia NZ Evidence Based Support Group covers off what they are and where you can buy them in NZ, as well as free downloadable options or books available on Apps. We are also seeing more and more libraries around the country have some of these as well. Or you can approach your library to acquire some.

And there is a very comprehensive list of decodable readers on the Spelfabet website (Australian based).

Note that the Ministry of Education also provides free to all schools the Phonics Plus Ready to Read series of teaching resources, including the decodable book series, sound cards, video guides and supporting games. Copies may be ordered from Ministry of Education Customer Services, online at www.thechair.co.nz; by email: orders@thechair.minedu.govt.nz; or freephone 0800 660 662.
