Update: 16 August 2024. Presentation created in 2021, updated August 2024.

Template: Presentation

We’ve created this presentation for parents or teachers to give a basic introduction to the science of reading research and the key elements of evidence-based teaching instruction. It also includes a summary of literacy policy in NZ over the past 30 years to provide wider context to moves over the past six years, under different governments, to mandate ‘Structured Literacy’ in primary schools.

The presentation is designed to take 30 minutes to present.

View the presentation: here. Please save your own copy if you wish to edit.

You can also view a video webinar of the presentation: here.

You can also download this presentation from Stephanie Sollar Consulting. It comes with:

  • presentation slides, handout, talking points

  • discussion guide

  • parent version

  • reading list

  • and many more related resources!

The presentation allows you to cover essential research findings, from the perspective of a professional who is learning and who wants to do better for all students. Use the slides and notes as a starting place, and customize the presentation to fit your local needs.

Template: Parent Letter

We also have a template parent communication/letter you can adapt to explain the new approach to your parents. Thanks to Lochiel School for developing this. You can access it here. Please save your own copy and edit from there.
