Two-day Structured Literacy Workshop, Dunedin (Literacy Connections)

Join us for two days of intensive instruction that will deliver an introduction to Structured Literacy in the classroom and via a tiered support system, and the practical skills to confidently teach it in a structured literacy way.

Day 1 – 22 April: Introduction to Structured Literacy

This workshop provides an introduction to Structured Literacy in the classroom and via a tiered support system.

  • What is a Structured Literacy approach?

  • The importance of Science of Reading (SOR) and Science of Learning (SOL)

  • The importance of phonemic awareness

  • How to use a scope and sequence

  • Decodable books

  • Lesson plan – whole class, group and individual

  • Assessment, data collection and reporting

  • Orthographic Mapping

Day 2 – 23 April: Teaching the Patterns of the English Language in a Structured Literacy Way

Learn about the patterns of the English language. This increased knowledge will provide a pathway to confidently teach it in a structured literacy way – systematically, cumulatively, explicitly and diagnostically. Our presenters will deliver practical workshops giving you the opportunity to increase your teacher knowledge around literacy terms such as syllable type, digraph, schwa, diphthong, affixes and the alphabetic principle. There will be ample opportunity to gain a deep understanding of all the literacy terms covered and time to practice applying the knowledge gained.

Includes a shared drive of resources and printed materials.

Cost: $550 + GST (morning tea and lunch provided, attendance at both days is required).
